The Narendra Modi government will move a constitutional amendment bill that will give 10 per cent reservation in government jobs and education for economically backward section in the general category.
The quota, according to sources, will be for families which earn less than Rs 8 lakh per annum. Sections 15 and 16 of the Constitution are to be changed to accommodate the amendment.
This reservation will be over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation, sources said, adding that the government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday. “The reservation will be given to those economically backward poor people who are not availing the benefit of reservation as of now,” a source said.
The winter session of the parliament is likely to be extended for another two days. According to sources the bill was passed by the Union cabinet. The strategic move comes just ahead of the general elections.
