Dr Hasmukh Shah, a leading GP from South Wales, has been bestowed with membership by the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK (MRCGP).

The honour from the RCGP, the professional body that represents 52,000 general practitioners across the UK, recognises the special contribution made by a doctor to medicine or society.

Shah, a winner of the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2018, is the secretary of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) Wales Division, which champions the work of Indian doctors based in Wales.

Arriving in the UK from Gujarat in 1975, with just £3 in his hand, Shah made his mark through persistence and patience.

He has been one of the leading and most recognisable figures among the local community in Llwynypia in the Rhondda Valley, serving as a member of his local health board for nearly 20 years, and on the British Medical Association’s Welsh GPs committee.

Shah was awarded the visiting fellowship by the University of South Wales in 2017.
