HUNDREDS of people are expected to pay tributes to Leicester councillor Mo (Mansukhlal) Chohan whose funeral will take place tomorrow (27). Politicians and community leaders have mourned his passing last Sunday (21). Leicester East MP Keith Vaz MP said: “This is a terrible loss for his family and to the community of Belgrave. He was an icon a hardworking and dedicated councillor and a true friend. May he Rest in Peace”.
Local reports said Belgrave Road, which Chohan represented, will be closed in the morning as the cortege passes through the area tomorrow. Diwali lights are also expected to be dimmed on Sunday (28) as a mark of respect. Simon Cole, chief constable of Leicester, was among several of those who condoled the passing of the popular councillor. Chohan was a “man who dedicated so much of his time to serving and supporting others,” said the chief constable.
Jennie Formby, general secretary of the Labour Party, said on Twitter: “I’m so very sad to learn of the death of Leicester East Belgrave Councillor Mo Chohan who I met on Friday. He made a great contribution to the Labour Party and will be deeply missed.” Councillor Bill Shelton recalled how they were both elected in 1999 and described him on social media as a “lovely friendly guy and will be sadly missed”. The funeral will take place on Saturday (27) at noon at Gilrose and a procession will leave his home at 10.30am, the Labour Party said.
